DT Textiles - Dress a Girl Around the World

dress around the world images.jpg

Students at Penistone Grammar School ALC have made 40 dresses to send off to the charity dress a girl around the world.

After an initial request for fabrics and materials to be donated the response from teachers, parents and the local community was astonishing! We had a fantastic donation of high quality fabrics and trimmings from coats craft UK which was amazing. All of the beautiful fabric donations and lots of support which enabled us to participate in this charity and produce these deserving little girls some beautiful dresses. This shows what a fantastic community Penistone Grammar School ALC is built around.

20 of the dresses were made during after school textiles club by a varied range of key stages (ages 12-17). All students who participated gave up their own time after school and took their time to produce high quality dresses that would last the little girls a long time.

20 of the dresses were made by GCSE Textiles students as a skills builder before coursework where we filmed our own episode of 'The Great Penistone Sewing Bee'. The GCSE girls really challenged themselves to create more complex dresses which were very creative alongside being beautifully made.

All of the dresses have been made from new cotton fabric as it is easy to care for and durable so they will last the little girls longer-as this is the only dress they will ever own!

Most of the dresses have extendable straps/ buttonholes so that the dresses will grow with the child.

Our core values as a school are: Aim High, Be Brave, be Determined, Be Supportive and Be proud and I feel our students have fulfilled each of these values through supporting this charity, being determined to succeed, aiming high in producing beautiful, quality dresses and being proud to participate in this charity.

Alongside making the dresses students have raised the money to send the dresses to the ambassador alongside a cheque to help the charity with costs. £50.00 was raised by completing 'guess the bears name' for £1 and students in KBR tutor group raised £21.40 by holding a bake sale in school.
