Welcome to HeartSpace

In HeartSpace, we provide a thriving, inclusive and welcoming learning environment for students that have an EHCP.

Students who access HeartSpace will have a bespoke timetable that is tailored to their individual needs which enables them to access a range of mainstream lessons with a dedicated Learning Support Assistant. HeartSpace lessons are delivered by specialist teachers and students will also access a variety of both academic and therapeutic interventions.

HeartSpace staff are dedicated to supporting students to develop not only academically but holistically. We work towards all our students leaving Penistone as the most independent and confident learner they can be. We understand that working collaboratively with parents and carers is vital to provide the best support. Therefore, ensuring we are in constant communication with home to build up a positive relationship.

"The HeartSpace is a quality provision. There is a warm, secure and welcoming environment which promotes excellent response from students. They talked happily about what they were learning, were proud of what they had done, and clearly had excellent professional relationships with all adults. There was evidence of good work and progress in books and, in a science lesson for example, evidence of teaching which had promoted real ‘stickability’ in knowledge. Leaders could clearly explain the purpose of the resource and how the structures supported the different groups of learners." - SIP Report 2022

Head of HeartSpace

Miss C Schofield

Before becoming Head of HeartSpace I worked as a primary school teacher in both the UK and overseas. During my own educational journey, I have gained three degrees – one in Child Psychology, one in Social Justice in Education and the third being my PGCE. Recently I have also gained my Level 5 Diploma in Trauma and Mental health and am now a Trauma Informed Practitioner. These qualifications help me to deliver bespoke trauma interventions and give me a good understanding of neuroscience of our students. I feel HeartSpace provides students with a foundation of skills for life that will set them up to become a well-rounded citizen. Our staff are supportive, caring and always put our students interests first.

Assistant Head of HeartSpace

Mrs S Wetherall

I started my teaching journey as a primary school teacher and became the SENDCO for 2 years before making the move to Penistone. My time as a SENDCO allowed me to work closely with students with a variety of additional needs and allowed me to build relationships with different outside agencies that can help support students within school. As Assistant Head of HeartSpace, I continue to work closely with different agencies to ensure we have as much support as possible in place for our students. I truly believe HeartSpace is an exceptional place that supports our students to thrive in education and develop themselves as amazing individuals.
