It is official! In 2019 we were in the top 4% of A Level providers for student progress and this is the third year in a row in which we have been in the top 10%. Congratulations to the class of 2019 on their outstanding achievements and thank you to all who supported them along this incredible journey.
Coupled with excellent facilities, the very best ICT provision and a modern, state of the art environment in which students can work, relax and socialise, our Post-16 Centre is second to none. The study area inspires students to learn and aim high and when they choose to relax there is a superb social area with dining facilities.
We offer first class support and guidance for students post-18 applications. In 2019 98% of students who applied gained places at their preferred institution with 52% gaining places at prestigious Russell Group universities.
Students who join us from other schools will find that they settle in very quickly and go on to have a successful and fulfilling experience with us. Above all we want our students to enjoy their post-16 experience at PGS and remember their time with us for the rest of their lives.
Meet the Team
The Post 16 team take a holistic approach to the development and care of students at Penistone. In addition to academic needs, we do everything that we can to provide support and advice on a whole range of issues to ensure the confidence and wellbeing of our students.
Students will have a personal tutor throughout their time in the Post 16 Centre. A students’ relationship with their tutor is very important, as not only will the tutor offer pastoral guidance but also monitor academic targets and oversee attainment and achievement. Students will have regular progress reviews with their personal tutor.
Mrs Rostern (Assistant Head of Post 16) oversees students through every step of the UCAS process to ensure successful outcomes.

We believe that the Post 16 experience extends beyond the classroom and we strive to provide all the opportunities which, if embraced, make success inevitable.
Enrichment is a central part of what we do at Penistone. Not only will it form a key part of any UCAS application, signing up for the various enrichment programmes on offer will also develop your self-confidence, skills and leadership qualities. We have a range of opportunities available which include a student union and the chance to participate in a variety of sports teams, music and drama productions, work experience, the World Challenge and Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
Our £35M state-of-the-art learning centre provides fantastic facilities for our students and the surrounding community.
As well as access to first class teaching facilities, our Post 16 centre includes a large common room area in which to relax and work, a dedicated ICT suite which provides all-day access to internet-linked computers and a cafe which is open throughout the day serving hot and cold food and drinks.
Deciding on your next steps after A Levels can be a daunting process. The PGS Post 16 Team are on hand to ensure you feel supported to explore a range of potential pathways.
There is a wealth of resources in the Post 16 study area to assist you when investigating different university courses and pathways to other forms of education. We have a team of tutors, career advisors and mentors who are available to offer guidance and prepare you for higher education or employment. We will encourage you to visit different universities on their open days and provide opportunities to meet university academics when they visit the school as guest speakers in assemblies, tutorials and taster seminars.
At Penistone Grammar School we are committed to supporting students in full time education.
To promote this, the Post 16 facility has access to a 16-19 Bursary Fund, whereby students can apply for assistance towards costs associated with their continued education.
This funding is intended to help students with the actual costs of participating in Post 16 education and can be used to support the following:
Purchase of books, stationery, files, etc.
Transport to and from Post 16
Exam fees and resits
Field trips and course visits
University open day expenses (e.g. travel and accommodation for the student)
